rapid automatic motor encoding of competing reach options
jason p. gallivan, brandie m. stewart, lee a. baugh, daniel m. wolpert, j. randall flanagan 2017
j.celrep.2017.01.049
•Previous work suggests that competing movements are prepared for potential targets
•We dissociated, unbeknownst to subjects, the motor versus visual directions of targets
•Movement direction toward potential targets reflects a rapid coding of reach paths
•This suggests an automatic conversion of action options into associated movements
Mounting neural evidence suggests that, in situations in which there are multiple potential targets for action, the brain prepares, in parallel, competing movements associated with these targets, prior to implementing one of them. Central to this interpretation is the idea that competing viewed targets, prior to selection, are rapidly and automatically transformed into corresponding motor representations. Here, by applying target-specific, gradual visuomotor rotations and dissociating, unbeknownst to participants, the visual direction of potential targets from the direction of the movements required to reach the same targets, we provide direct evidence for this provocative idea. Our results offer strong empirical support for theories suggesting that competing action options are automatically represented in terms of the movements required to attain them. The rapid motor encoding of potential targets may support the fast optimization of motor costs under conditions of target uncertainty and allow the motor system to inform decisions about target selection.

thinking ahead and staying in the present: implications for reactivity to daily stressors
melody polk et al. 2020
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.paid.2020.109971
“It’s well established that daily stressors can make us more likely to have negative affect, or bad moods,” says Shevaun Neupert, a professor of psychology at NC State and corresponding author of a paper on the recent work. “Our work here sheds additional light on which variables influence how we respond to daily stress.”
Specifically, the researchers looked at two factors that are thought to influence how we handle stress: mindfulness and proactive coping.
Mindfulness is when people are centered and living in the moment, rather than dwelling in the past or worrying about the future. Proactive coping is when people engage in planning to reduce the likelihood of future stress.
To see how these factors influence responses to stress, the researchers looked at data from 223 study participants. The study included 116 people between the ages of 60 and 90, and 107 people between the ages of 18 and 36. All of the study participants were in the United States.
All of the study participants were asked to complete an initial survey in order to establish their tendency to engage in proactive coping. Participants were then asked to complete questionnaires for eight consecutive days that explored fluctuations in mindfulness. On those eight days, participants were also asked to report daily stressors and the extent to which they experienced negative mood.
The researchers found that engaging in proactive coping was beneficial at limiting the effect of daily stressors, but that this advantage essentially disappeared on days when a participant reported low mindfulness.
“Our results show that a combination of proactive coping and high mindfulness result in study participants of all ages being more resilient against daily stressors,” Neupert says. “Basically, we found that proactive planning and mindfulness account for about a quarter of the variance in how stressors influenced negative affect.
“Interventions targeting daily fluctuations in mindfulness may be especially helpful for those who are high in proactive coping and may be more inclined to think ahead to the future at the expense of remaining in the present.”
abstract •Emotional reactivity to daily stressors depends on both state and trait constructs.
•Trait-like proactive coping and state-like mindfulness affect daily stress outcomes.
•People high in proactive coping were vulnerable to decreases in daily mindfulness.
We examined how proactive coping and daily mindfulness may work together to predict emotional reactivity to daily stressors. Using data from the Mindfulness and Anticipatory Coping Everyday study (MACE; Neupert & Bellingtier, 2017; Neupert & Bellingtier, 2019), 116 older adults and 107 younger adults participated in a daily diary study for nine consecutive days. Results from multilevel models suggest that people high in proactive coping were more emotionally reactive to daily stressors on days with decreased mindfulness. Due to the trait-like future-oriented thinking of proactive coping and the state-like present-oriented aspect of daily mindfulness, these results underscore the importance of simultaneously considering state and trait information to elucidate antecedents, correlates, and consequences of daily stressors.

management of plastic bottle and filter waste during the large-scale flint michigan lead contaminated drinking water incident
tianqi wang et al. 2018
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.resconrec.2018.08.021
The last thing you want to do during a crisis is add to the burden of the communities. And with so many people rushing to provide bottled water to Flint, we definitely had a waste problem that we needed to resolve quickly," said Matt Flechter, the recycling market development specialist for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), one of the organizations interviewed for this study.
The study and its recommendations, published in the journal Resources, Conservation and Recycling, are the result of conversations with several organizations who were on the frontlines during the Flint lead crisis, including MDEQ, the City of Flint, Republic Services, Inc. and Schupan Recycling. The researchers did not seek or receive external funding for this work.
"When you shut down an entire water system and provide emergency water, there is a whole lot of waste generated. Where does it all go?" said Andrew Whelton, Purdue associate professor of civil engineering and environmental and ecological engineering, who led the study.
"It turns out that no one had looked at the waste associated with providing emergency drinking water long-term, until we investigated the Flint incident," he said.
During the time that the Flint lead crisis was taking place, Tianqi Wang, a master's student in civil engineering, and Jooho Kim, a doctoral student in construction engineering and management, wanted to calculate how much waste the crisis was generating as part of an in-class activity for a solid and hazardous waste management course taught by Whelton.
They were shocked to find that the millions of water bottles would have overwhelmed the city's waste management system.
Key to Flint's successful waste hauling, the researchers later discovered, were community organizations and government agencies who established sites around the community to distribute donated water bottles and filters, and pick up or drop off waste. They also helped residents to know about these services through local TV, social media and websites, newspapers and flyers.
But the process would need to be smoother for future crises.
"Waste management wasn't built into the emergency response at all, so what we did was more reactionary than planned-out," Flechter said.
Planning it out could possibly buy more time for other aspects of an emergency response, such as evaluating which households aren't getting enough safe water.
Therefore, as part of their study, Purdue researchers recommended several ways for incorporating waste management into an emergency response plan. These include pre-identifying the roles of waste management organizations, setting up a procedure for estimating and documenting emergency water supply materials entering and exiting a community, determining where water should be distributed in advance, drafting public notifications about waste management activities and making the data on this emergency response publicly available so that people can conduct more case studies on the best possible strategies.
Unfortunately, it could be a while before waste management makes it into plans throughout the U.S.
"Drinking water is considered a critical lifeline, but federal emergency management doctrine has no clearly defined mission that is specific to supporting response and recovery," said Kevin Morley, the federal relations manager for the American Water Works Association (AWWA). In 2017, AWWA testified to Congress on this matter and the impact on effective coordination and communications.
Even though federal organizations -- including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency -- provide guidelines for estimating how much water a person needs when a disaster strikes, the focus for waste removal is typically on large debris, such as tree limbs and building materials during a hurricane.
"In order for waste management protocols -- like for bottled water if that's the temporary solution -- to be considered appropriately, there needs to be a clear water mission in the National Response Framework," Morley said. "Then information sharing and coordination associated with the need can more effectively be considered as part of the overall response effort and demands on local waste management infrastructure."
Still, the organizations who informed this study have already found its recommendations useful for water quality incidents in other communities across Michigan.
"It's nice to have clear action steps and know which questions to bring up early. This way, we're looking at the existing recycling infrastructure from the get-go and know how those bottles should be managed," Flechter said.

forecasting high-dimensional dynamics exploiting suboptimal embeddings
shunya okuno et al. 2020
http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41598-019-57255-4
By combining the predictions of many suboptimal forecasts, they were able to construct a consensus prediction that tended to outperform existing methods. This research may help provide early warnings for floods, economic shocks, or changes in the weather.
Time series data are a familiar part of our daily lives. A gyrating graph might represent the water level of a river, the price of a stock, or the daily high temperature in a city, just to name a few. Advance knowledge of the future movements of a time series could be used to avert or prepare for future undesirable events. However, forecasting is extremely difficult because the underlying dynamics that generates the values are nonlinear (even if assumed to be deterministic) and therefore subject to wild fluctuations.
Delay embedding is a widely used method to help make sense of time series data and attempt to predict future values. This approach takes a sequence of observations and “embeds” them in a higher-dimensional space by combining the current value with evenly spaced lagged values from the past. For example, to create a three-dimensional delay embedding of the S&P 500 closing price, you can take the closing prices today, yesterday, and the day before as the x-, y-, and z-coordinates, respectively. However, the possible choices for embedding dimension and delay lag make finding the most useful representation for making forecasts a matter of trial and error.
Now, researchers at the University of Tokyo and Kozo Keikaku Engineering Inc. have showed a way to select and optimize a collection of delay embeddings so that their combined forecast does better than any individual predictor. “We found that the ‘wisdom of the crowd,’ in which the consensus prediction is better than each on its own, can be true even with mathematical models,” first author Shunya Okuno explains.
The researchers tested their method on real-world flood data, as well as theoretical equations with chaotic behavior. “We expect that this approach will find many practical applications in forecasting time series data, and reinvigorate the use of delay embeddings,” senior author Yoshito Hirata says. Forecasting a future system state is an important task in many different fields including neuroscience, ecology, finance, fluid dynamics, weather, and disaster prevention, hence this work has potential for use in a wide range of applications.
abstract Delay embedding—a method for reconstructing dynamical systems by delay coordinates—is widely used to forecast nonlinear time series as a model-free approach. When multivariate time series are observed, several existing frameworks can be applied to yield a single forecast combining multiple forecasts derived from various embeddings. However, the performance of these frameworks is not always satisfactory because they randomly select embeddings or use brute force and do not consider the diversity of the embeddings to combine. Herein, we develop a forecasting framework that overcomes these existing problems. The framework exploits various “suboptimal embeddings” obtained by minimizing the in-sample error via combinatorial optimization. The framework achieves the best results among existing frameworks for sample toy datasets and a real-world flood dataset. We show that the framework is applicable to a wide range of data lengths and dimensions. Therefore, the framework can be applied to various fields such as neuroscience, ecology, finance, fluid dynamics, weather, and disaster prevention.
