  • The extent and nature of symbolic behavior among Neandertals are obscure. Although evidence for Neandertal body ornamentation has been proposed, all cave painting has been attributed to modern humans. Here we present dating results for three sites in Spain that show that cave art emerged in Iberia substantially earlier than previously thought. Uranium-thorium (U-Th) dates on carbonate crusts overlying paintings provide minimum ages for a red linear motif in La Pasiega (Cantabria), a hand stencil in Maltravieso (Extremadura), and red-painted speleothems in Ardales (Andalucía). Collectively, these results show that cave art in Iberia is older than 64.8 thousand years (ka). This cave art is the earliest dated so far and predates, by at least 20 ka, the arrival of modern humans in Europe, which implies Neandertal authorship.

  • The Adena pipe figurine was found in the 2000 year-old Adena burial mound in Ross County, Ohio, USA by William C. Mills in 1901. The pipe reportedly represents an achondroplastic dwarf male Native American. However, the clinical aspect (swelling of the neck), the environmental/cultural characteristics in this area (iodine-poor soils, absence of seafood and milk consumption, tobacco smoking), and the marked prevalence of goiter among Native American populations favor the diagnosis of a goiter associated to iodine deficiency. Similar indigenous art representations found in South America and Mesoamerica strengthen this hypothesis. To our knowledge the Adena pipe is the first example of goiter depicted in Native North American art and one of the oldest from the continent.

  • Colours that we see in nature often come from nanoscale patterns that reflect light back in particular ways. A butterfly’s wing, for example, might appear blue because tiny grooves in the surface of the wing cause only blue light to be reflected.
    When surfaces appear black or white, however, it’s often because the nanoscale structures are completely disordered, causing all the light to be either absorbed or reflected.
    A team of researchers led by the University of Birmingham has now found a way to control the way light passes through these disordered surfaces to produce vivid colours.
    The team, which includes colleagues in Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany, and Nanjing University in China, has compared the method to techniques that artists have exploited for centuries. Among the most famous examples of this is the fourth-century Roman Lycurgus cup, made from glass that appears green when light shines on it from the front, but red when light shines through it from behind.
    In a modern advance, the research team demonstrated a way of finely controlling this effect to produce extraordinarily precise colour reproduction.
    The different colours in the image are represented in different thicknesses of a transparent material — such as glass — on a lithographic plate. On top of this, the researchers deposited the disordered layer — in this case made of random clusters of gold nanoparticles. Finally, beneath this layer, the team placed a mirrored to form a transparent cavity. The cavity is able to trap particles of light, or photons, inside. The photons behave like waves inside the cavity, resonating at different frequencies beneath the lithographic surface and releasing different colours according to the length of each wave.
    By using this technique, the team was able to reproduce a Chinese water colour painting with exquisite colour accuracy.

  • abstract Disordered biostructures are ubiquitous in nature, usually generating white or black colours due to their broadband optical response and robustness to perturbations. Through judicious design, disordered nanostructures have been realised in artificial systems, with unique properties for light localisation, photon transportation and energy harvesting. On the other hand, the tunability of disordered systems with a broadband response has been scarcely explored. Here, we achieve the controlled manipulation of disordered plasmonic systems, realising the transition from broadband absorption to tunable reflection through deterministic control of the coupling to an external cavity. Starting from a generalised model, we realise disordered systems composed of plasmonic nanoclusters that either operate as a broadband absorber or with a reconfigurable reflection band throughout the visible. Not limited to its significance for the further understanding of the physics of disorder, our disordered plasmonic system provides a novel platform for various practical application such as structural colour patterning.

    • using the import button to import a pdf initially gives you just a menu of pdf pages. i haven’t found a way of importing all the pages automatically, so you need to place each page on the canvas by hand, carefully spreading them horizontally so the export can put them back together in the right order. i found that scrolling the canvas off to the left and the tapping on the next page to be inserted worked well
